KUER’s Queens of Music

Just before the pandemic in March of 2020, to celebrate International Women’s Day KUER hosted an event at the Gateway where a dozen artists nominated their Queen’s of Music to honor. We were both selected as separate artists to depict our nominees: Alli’s choice of punk legend Poly Styrene, and Caroline’s choice of the iconic Amy Winehouse.

While fighting the cold weather, we live-painted and completed these 8 ft x 8 ft murals in a matter of 10 hours!

Designs were inspired by the music made by each music Queen. Poly Styrene known for her edgy aesthetic, on the forefront of pioneering punk music. Alli chose to honor her by utilizing an iconic image of the starlet Marilyn Monroe, known for her classic beauty. This image was then stenciled and spray painted over, and lastly the smile dawned Poly’s iconic braces.

Amy’s smoky voice and turn of the century aesthetic inspired Caroline to depict her in a classic comic style. With her memorable eyeliner and hairstyle fitting the caricature style perfectly.
