Norbridge Court Apartments

Salt Lake City, Utah

Located across the street from a TRAX stop and less than a block from the Gateway, the building has 62 modern two and three bedroom apartments affordable for households between 20-80% of area median income. The building includes retail spaces and offices for nonprofit organizations and small businesses.

Our client wanted the artwork to feel open-ended, abstract, uplifting, and modern. Our design uses fluid forms that evoke the ridgelines and rocky terrain surrounding the city to envelope the building and the columns of the entryway. Thin lines of the bright pinks and reds run throughout the design, mimicking natural sediment deposits of quartz and mica found in metamorphic rocks around Utah.

These bright elements bring a sparkling nature to the composite rocks, which we found to be a perfect metaphor for the residents of the building; people from different backgrounds and experiences living together, which under the right conditions, can transform into something bright and beautiful.

Using a combination of the muted, natural tones identified by the architect, paired with some richer pops of color like a raspberry, fuschia and deep teal, this concept feels both soothing & unexpected in a way that makes the exterior feel like an intriguing piece of abstract art.
