Take Me Out to the Ballpark
The Engine Block
Salt Lake City, Utah
The Ballpark Mural Program was initiated in order to preserve the legacy of the Ballpark Neighborhood in Salt Lake City, Utah (named after its association with baseball for over a century, as home to both Smith's Ballpark and Derks Field before that). Artists were paired with a local business and worked to design a piece that tells a story of Ballpark's baseball roots and beyond.
We ended up with a building on the Engine Block at 1388 S. 300 West. We quickly found out the area’s history was more than just baseball. It was very industrial & blue collar. There was a long history of machinery production and automotive.
In order to celebrate both aspects of the neighborhood, we created little vingnettes that all work together to create a patchwork design showcasing baseball, industry, and a little cheeky inclusion of humor by including prayer hands clasping onto a corndog.
